The ancient city of Paestum belongs to the municipality of Capaccio, in the Gulf of Salerno and it is one of the major attractions of the Cilento area.

Today, only its ruins remain, but once its splendour was known throughout the all territory of the Magna Graecia.

A bit of History

The city was funded during the second half of the 7^th century b.C., probably by a few Sybarite Dorians and reached its highest splendour during the Greek domination, when it was known as Poseidonia.

 In 273 b.C. , it was conquered by the Romans, who changed its name into the current Paestum.

 The end of the city is probably due to a progressive silting up and swamping of the territory because of a river which was needed for transporting wood to the Romans.

In spite of the citizens’ efforts, the abundant calcareous waters deposited sediments everywhere, so much that they buried the urban plan under a stone layer.

Citizens slowly abandoned it and forgot about it.

Things to see in Paestum

Early excavations started in 1900 and ended during the 70s bringing to light an extraordinary proof of ancient times.

Nowadays, many tourists come to this city, attracted by the uniqueness of a timeless place.

The walls, on which once stood 24 towers, form a frame to the main monuments of a blooming era.

In Paestum one can admire the Temple of Neptune, of Doric origins, kept in excellent conditions, the one dedicated to Hera, the oldest is the one dedicated to Ceres, known as Temple of Athena.

The city can be accessed by four gates which open at the end of the two main roads.

Inside it is possible to live again past times whilst observing the basilica, the amphitheatre, the forum and the ruins of Roman houses.

It is also possible to visit the National Archaeological Museum of Paestum, inside of which the diver’s tomb is situated.
