Ruins of Pompeii

 Borgo Riccio historical residence is situated in Torchiara, in the province of Salerno, and it is about 50 minutes from the famous Ruins of Pompeii.

This locality, situated on the Southern side of Meridionale of the Vesuvius (a volcano), is one of the most famous tourist attractions of the world, a destination of millions of tourists each year.

The ruins spread over about 66 hectares, of which a third is yet to be excavated.

The archaeological site is open all year round and it can be easily reached thanks to the frequent bus and train connections.

A bit of History

Important commercial port since ancient times, Pompeii reached its highest splendour around the 2^nd Century b.C., when the Romans dominated the Mediterranean.

The riches and wealth of the city lead to the construction of public and private luxurious palaces.

 In 79 a.C., following an eruption of Vesuvius, Pompeii got submerged by the ashes which solidified and left intact the ancient structures, allowing us to have a proof, unequalled in the whole world, of the far past.

What to see in Pompeii

When arriving in Pompeii, it seems to suddenly go back in time: stone roads marked by the passage of carts, the porches of luxury buildings, the workshops of artisans, thermal baths and temples dedicated to patron gods.

The charm of ancient Rome rises from every corner, telling us about a far past which is not very different from ours, in which people faces the common problems of every day’s life.

 Roman people loved taking care of themselves, a proof of that are the thermal baths, an important place to meet and socialize.

The Stabiane and Foro Thermal Baths are very interesting, they still keep the various subdivisions of the rooms of the different types of treatments: the frigidarium, tepidarium, calidarium.

Close to the Amphitheatre, area dedicated to games, there is still the gymnasium where the athletes used to spend their time training and getting ready for the shows.

In the many theatres scattered around the city, it is still possible to see the main structures, from the cavea, the steps where spectators used to sit, to the proscenium, where actors used to perform.

The deep religiousness emerges from the temples dedicated to gods, like the Temple of Isis, the Temple of Jove, the Temple of Venus, with their porticoed structure and division of areas for the different stages of the religious ritual.

The Villa of Mysteries is particularly beautiful, with wonderful pictorial decorations and the Villa of Diomede, with residential areas and thermal baths.

A curiosity emerged on the walls, the use of inscriptions for electoral campaigns. A bit like what happens nowadays for the advertisements, candidates wrote on the wall their own name and political slogan.

A peculiarity which makes even more unique this city is the fact that the ash has stopped time, petrifying the last moment of life of its inhabitants. Today the plaster casts are left as a reminder and proof of a catastrophic event which caused the end of the ancient Pompeii.
